Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973 in Mangalore, Karnataka, in the Tulu speaking Bunt family. She is the winner of the Miss World 1994 pageant. Her father, Krishnaraj, who died on March 18, 2017, was an army biologist, and her mother Vrinda was a housewife. She has an older brother Aditya Rai, an engineer in the Merchant Navy. Rai's film Dil Ka Rishta (2003) was co-produced by her brother and co-authored by her mother. The family moved to Mumbai, where Rai attended Arya Vidya Mandir High School. After completing a year of middle school at Jai Hind College, Rai joined DG Ruparel College in Matunga to secure 90% on the HSC exam.

Rai is the first Indian actress to be featured on the Cannes International Film Festival jury. In October 2004, Rai's wax figure was on display at the Madame Tussaud Wax Museum in London. She earned this honor as her sixth Indian and second Bollywood figure, following her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan. In 2007, the same painting was also displayed at the Madame Tussauds Museum in Times Square, New York. Her most distinctive physical features, Lai's green-blue eyes, beautiful lips, curves, and feminine mannerism were cited in the press as her trademark.

After five years of sabbatical in acting in the movie, Rai made a comeback with Sanjay Gupta's drama thriller Jazbaa, co-starred by Shabana Azmi and Irrfan Khan. A remake of the Korean thriller Seven Days (2007), the film saw Lai playing the role of criminal lawyer Anura Da Verma, who must defend the rapist in exchange for her daughter's safety. Rai made her acting debut in 1997 with Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar. The film was a huge success and won the Belgrade International Film Festival's Best Film Award, among other awards. Rai was critically appreciated for playing an avid artist in the Tamil romance Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000), Tagore's heroine Binodini, the Bengal film Chokher Bali (2003), the melancholy woman in the drama Raincoat (2004), and Kiranjit Ahluwalia in England. Through a successful acting career, she has established herself as one of India's most popular and influential celebrities. Rai has received numerous accolades, including two Filmfare Awards, and was awarded Padma Shri by the Indian government in 2009 and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2012.
